You receive an error message when you try to change the replication scope of a DNS zone for a child domain on a DNS server that is running Windows Server 2003

On a Domain Name System (DNS) server that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, you have a DNS zone for a child domain. This zone is integrated with Active Directory. When you try to change the replication scope of this zone from all domain controllers in the domain to all DNS servers in the forest, you may receive the following error message:

This issue may occur if the DNS server of the root domain already has an Active Directory-integrated DNS stub zone with the same name as that of the DNS zone for the child domain.

To resolve this issue, remove the DNS stub zone from the DNS server of the root domain. To remove the DNS stub zone, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
2. In the left pane, expand ServerName, and then expand Forward Lookup Zones.
3. Locate the DNS stub zone that you want to remove, right-click it, and then click Delete.
4. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
   
   Note If the DNS stub zone that you want to remove is an Active Directory-integrated zone, you are prompted again to confirm the deletion of the DNS stub zone. Click Yes.

You create a DNS stub zone in the DNS server of the root domain. This DNS stub zone notifies the DNS server of the root domain about changes that are made to the DNS zone for the child domain.

For example, you may want to notify the DNS server of the root domain about additional authoritative DNS servers that you have added to the DNS zone for the child domain. To do this, you can create a DNS stub zone for the DNS zone for the child domain in the DNS server of the root domain. The DNS server of the root domain uses the information in the DNS stub zone to query DNS servers that are authoritative to the DNS zone for the child domain.
