More information

The following information may be logged in the cluster log file on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based server cluster computer during cluster failover or when you try to bring the cluster online:
00000948.00000aa8::2004/09/12-17:49:49.075 INFO Physical Disk <Disk W:>: Online, wait for PnP notification returns 258. 00000948.00000aa8::2004/09/12-17:49:49.075 ERR Physical Disk <Disk W:>: Online, volumes not ready. Error: 258. 00000948.00000aa8::2004/09/12-17:49:49.075 INFO Physical Disk <Disk W:>: Online, setting ResourceState 4.
These messages indicate that a volume has not been brought online successfully when the volume status was checked. Some disks may require additional time to be brought online because of multipathing dependencies, other filter drivers, or hardware specific behaviors.

If these messages occur more than four times in a row, the following message is logged in the cluster log file:
00000948.00000aa8::2004/09/12-17:49:49.075 INFO Physical Disk <Disk W:>: Online, returning final error 258 ResourceState 4 Valid 0
Note This message indicates that the physical disk cannot be brought online after four attempts. This message may appear during heavy activity, such as a migration. A migration typically occurs only one time, but it may be alleviated by bringing the disk online manually. If you cannot bring the disk online manually, you may need to contact your storage vendor or any filter driver vendor that the disk I/O may pass through.

Note Error 258 could also occur if a volume shadow copy has failed, causing the volume not to clear the hidden flag.

Note These messages are new to Windows 2003 Advanced Server and Windows 2003 Datacenter Editions and were not displayed in previous versions.
