A printer connection that is bridged between Windows 98 and Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server stops working

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, a bridged printer connection that you created occasionally stops working. In Windows Server 2003 and in Windows 2000 Server, you can create a connection to a printer that is shared on a Microsoft Windows 98-based client computer. You can then share this printer connection to other client computers. This configures a "bridged connection" between the client computers in your organization and the shared printer.

Cause

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
822553 You experience slow printer performance on a clustered print server in Windows Server 2003
  • You do not install the KB822553 hotfix, but you have more than 20 bridged printer connections created on the Windows Server 2003-based or Windows 2000 Server-based computer.
If one of these conditions exist, client computers may not be able to use certain bridged printer connections. However, this affects bridged printer connections randomly. If you print a test page to the affected printer from the Windows Server 2003-based or Windows 2000 Server-based computer, that printer connection starts to work again. However, in this scenario, a different bridged printer connection may stop working.

There is a problem in the Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 Server component that handles remote printer name caching. This problem appears in a scenario where you configure bridged printer connections.
