Print features, such as the watermarks feature, the n-up printing feature, and the collate feature, do not work if you print to a Novell, to an IPP, or to another partial print provider in Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you print to a network print server, some printing features do not work correctly. For example, you experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • Watermarks do not print.
  • You cannot print multiple pages of a document on a single piece of paper. This process is referred to as n-up printing.
  • If you print multiple copies of a document, the collate option does not work.
Print servers that may be affected by this symptom include print servers from Novell, printer servers that use the Internet Printing protocol (IPP), and other partial print providers. Other print servers that may be affected include systems that support SMB. These print servers include shared printers and print servers that use Samba and Linux.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Microsoft print architecture requires that that you set the default printer driver on the server to Print Processor. Some non-standard network print providers cannot do this. Therefore, the print queue may spool the job as raw data and skip the Print Processor driver. When this happens, certain printer features do not work correctly.

Note In some circumstances, you may want to return the system to its previous state; that is, you may want your system to again exhibit the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

To do this, enable the option in your printer to send documents directly to the print device and not to spool the documents. To enable the option in your printer to send documents directly to the print device, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click your printer name, click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab.
  2. Click to select the Print directly to the printer check box, and then click OK.
You may want to enable the setting in your printer to send documents directly to the printer. This may be useful in the following scenarios:
  • After you apply the hotfix, you notice a problem. You notice that the printer driver expects the old spooler behavior and does not correctly handle the new spooler behavior.
  • You want to avoid spooling the document to disk. For example, you may be using the printer as a gateway to another protocol.
