Your offline files or redirected folders synchronize automatically when you log off or log on to a Windows Server 2003-based computer

Symptoms

When you log off or log on to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, your offline files or redirected folders synchronize automatically. This behavior occurs even after you configure Group Policy not to synchronize offline files during log off and log on.

Cause

This behavior occurs because redirected folders are always made available offline. Also, changes that you make in Group Policy only modify settings for complete synchronization or quick synchronization of offline files in Synchronization Manager. When you configure Group Policy to synchronize offline files, Synchronization Manager is configured to automatically synchronize your offline files during log off or log on. When you disable the policy settings for synchronization of offline files in Group Policy, Group Policy prevents synchronization of offline files in Synchronization Manager but still enables quick synchronization.

Note Complete synchronization makes sure that offline files are complete and current. Quick synchronization makes sure that offline files are complete. However, quick synchronization does not make sure that offline files are current.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, manually configure Synchronization Manager not to synchronize offline files during log off or log on. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type mobsync in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In the Items to Synchronize dialog box, Click Setup.
  3. Click the Logon/Logoff tab.
  4. Under Automatically synchronize the selected items, click to clear the When I log on to my computer check box, and then click to clear the When I log off my computer check box.

Note If you want Synchronization Manager to prompt you before synchronizing Offline Files, click to select the Ask me before synchronizing the items check box.
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
