How to install US Payroll, Canadian Payroll, and Business Portal in the same environment

INTRODUCTION 

This article discusses how to install US Payroll and Canadian Payroll in the same Microsoft Dynamics GP environment. Additionally, the article discusses how to install Business Portal when it is used together with US Payroll and Canadian Payroll.

For a customer who requires both US Payroll and Canadian Payroll, two separate Microsoft Dynamics GP server installations are required. The two server installations can be separated by the instance of Microsoft SQL Server or by the computer that is running SQL Server. 

Notes 
• Microsoft Dynamics Technical Support does not recommend nor support multiple Microsoft Dynamics GP server installations that contain different country codes within the same instance of SQL Server. 
• In this article, "Microsoft SQL Server" refers to Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or to Microsoft SQL Server 2008. 
• Microsoft Dynamics GP databases on SQL Server Desktop Engine (also known as MSDE 2000) or on Microsoft SQL Express 2005 are not supported for use with Business Portal. 

Install US Payroll and Canadian Payroll 
To install US Payroll and Canadian Payroll in Microsoft Dynamics GP, follow these steps. 

Notes 
• These steps describe how to install US Payroll and Canadian Payroll on a computer that is running SQL Server. This computer is configured to use two instances of SQL Server. 
• Microsoft SQL Server allows for multiple instances of SQL Server to be installed on the same computer that is running SQL Server. US Payroll and Canadian Payroll must be installed to two separate instances of SQL Server. For information about how to license SQL Server or about how many client access licenses (CALs) are required, contact Microsoft Licensing at 1-800-426-9400 in the United States or at 877-568-2495 in Canada. 

1. Obtain one set of Microsoft Dynamics GP registration keys. This set of registration keys must contain System Manager, US Payroll, and Canadian Payroll. You will use this set to install both US Payroll and Canadian Payroll. 

Notes 
• For information about registration keys or the Microsoft Software License Terms, contact the Microsoft Dynamics Sales Operations Team at 1-800-456-0025. 
• This configuration applies to Canadian Human Resources and to US Human Resources. 

2. On the computer that will be running SQL Server, install the first instance of SQL Server. This installation can be the default instance of SQL Server or a named instance of SQL Server. 

Notes 
• For information about how to install Microsoft SQL Server, see Chapter 4 of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 Installation Manual . This document is available on the Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 CD. For information about how to install SQL Server for use with earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP, see the appropriate installation manual or Microsoft SQL Server documentation. 
• If you use a named instance of SQL Server, we recommend that you use a name that clearly identifies the version of Payroll. For example, name an instance for US Payroll as "GPUS" or an instance for Canadian Payroll as "GPCDN." 

3. On the computer that will be running SQL Server, install a named instance of SQL Server that is separate from the instance of SQL Server that you installed in step 2. This second instance of SQL Server must have the same Sort Order SQL Collation that was installed for the instance of SQL Server that you installed in step 2.

If you are not sure which Sort Order was installed, execute the following statement in SQL Query Analyzer, SQL Server Management Studio, or Support Administrator Console.

4. On the computer that is running SQL Server and on all client workstations, configure a unique ODBC connection to each instance of SQL Server. For more information about how to configure ODBC, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note 
When you name the ODBC DSN, we recommend that you use a name that clearly identifies the version of Payroll. For example, name the ODBC DSN for US Payroll as "GPUS," and name the ODBC DSN for Canadian Payroll as "GPCDN." 

5. On the computer that is running SQL Server, install a US server installation of Microsoft Dynamics GP into a unique directory location. For example, use the following location: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GPUS 

6. Start Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities, and then select the GPUS ODBC DSN that you configured in step 4. 

7. In Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities, create the DYNAMICS and company databases. For information about how to run Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities, see Chapter 7 of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP, see the appropriate installation manual. 

8. On the computer that is running SQL Server, install a Canadian server installation of Microsoft Dynamics GP into a unique directory location. For example, use the following location: 
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GPCDN 

When you install the Canadian server installation, you must use the same Account Framework setup that you used for the US server installation. 

9. Start Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities, and then select the GPCDN ODBC DSN that you configured in step 4. 

10. In Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities, create the DYNAMICS and company databases. For information about how to run Microsoft Dynamics GP Utilities, see Chapter 7 of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP, see the appropriate installation manual. 

11. Start Microsoft Dynamics GP for US Payroll. 

12. Enter the registration keys into the US server installation. To do this, follow these steps: 
a. On the Tools menu, click Setup
b. Click System , and then click Registration

13. Start Microsoft Dynamics GP for Canadian Payroll. 

14. Enter the same registration keys that you entered in step 12 into the Canadian server installation. To do this, follow these steps: 
a. On the Tools menu, click Setup
b. Click System , and then click Registration

15. Enter your Canadian Payroll Registration key. To do this, follow these steps: 
a. On the Tools menu, click Setup
b. Click Payroll-Canada , and then click Control

Note For more information about how to set up Payroll, see the PayrollUS.pdf and PayrollCAN.pdf manuals. These manuals are available on the Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 installation CD. 

16. Install Microsoft Dynamics GP on the client workstations. For the workstations that require access to both US Payroll and Canadian Payroll, install Microsoft Dynamics GP into two separate directories. For example, install US in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GPUS, and install Canadian in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics\GPCDN. For more information about how to install Microsoft Dynamics GP on client workstations, see Chapter 12 of the Microsoft Dynamics GP 9.0 Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics GP, see the appropriate installation manual. 

17. Start Microsoft Dynamics GP on each client workstation, and then select the appropriate ODBC DSN, depending on whether you are running US Payroll or Canadian Payroll. 

Notes 
• We recommend that you label the Microsoft Dynamics GP shortcut on the desktop and in the program list so that you can clearly identify which version of Payroll you are starting. 
• Do not use the Create SQL tables function of Canadian Payroll on the US Payroll installation. A US Payroll client must never be connected to the Canadian Payroll instance of SQL Server, and vise versa. 

Install Business Portal 
To install Business Portal when it is used together with US Payroll and together with Canadian Payroll, follow these steps. In this situation, US Payroll and Canadian Payroll are installed on a computer that is running SQL Server and that is configured to use two instances of SQL Server. 

Notes 
• Business Portal can be installed only one time on each server that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). Because of this restriction, you must use at least two separate servers that are running IIS. 

• Microsoft Dynamics Technical Support does not recommend that you install Business Portal on a computer that is running SQL Server because of potential decrease in performance. Therefore, we recommend that you use a designated computer that is running SQL Server to run the two named instances of SQL Server that you installed for US Payroll and Canadian Payroll in the "Install US Payroll and Canadian Payroll" section.

• The content and configuration databases for Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and Microsoft SharePoint Server must be separated. We recommend either of the following scenarios: 

• Install WSS and SharePoint Server as a Typical installation in which MSDE is installed to each server that is running IIS. 

• Install WSS and SharePoint Server as Server Farm, but keep the content and configuration databases unique to the named instances of SQL Server for US Payroll and for Canadian Payroll. 

• The following steps do not pertain to Extranet deployments in which Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server is implemented. 

1. Confirm that the registration keys for Microsoft Dynamics GP contain the Business Portal module. For information about how to register, contact the Microsoft Dynamics Sales Operations Team at 1-800-456-0025. 

Note 
This Microsoft Dynamics GP deployment requires two named instances of SQL Server together with additional connections from the two separate servers that are running IIS. For information about how to license SQL Server or about how many CALs are required, contact Microsoft Licensing at 1-800-426-9400 in the United States or at 877-568-2495 in Canada. 

2. Install Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on the two servers, install IIS, and then apply the latest Windows Server 2003 service packs. 

3. Note We recommend that you label these servers by using a name that clearly identifies the version of Payroll that is being used. For example, label the first server "USServer" and label the second server "CDNServer." 

4. Create a Web site for US-based Business Portal on the first server that is running IIS. Then, create a Web site for Canadian-based Business Portal on the second server that is running IIS. 

Notes 
• If you are installing Business Portal 2.5 or Business Portal 2.5 Feature Pack, remove Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 if it is installed. 
• Microsoft Dynamics Technical Support recommends that you create a new Web site that meets the following criteria: 

• It is not the Default Web site. 
• Its title has fewer than eight characters. 
• It uses a unique port number. 
• It has a unique directory location. 

5. On the first server that is running IIS, install WSS or SharePoint Portal Server. This server that is running IIS contains the Business Portal installation that is used together with US Payroll. Then, extend the Business Portal Web site. 

Notes 
• If you install WSS or SharePoint Portal Server as a Typical installation, MSDE will be installed locally to the server that is running IIS to store the content and configuration databases. If you use the Server Farm installation, the content and configuration databases should be directed to the named instance of SQL Server or to the separate SQL Server for US Payroll.

 • For more information about how to install WSS, see Chapter 7 of the Microsoft Business Portal Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Business Portal, see to the appropriate documentation or the WSS and SharePoint Server documentation. 

6. On the first server that is running IIS, install Business Portal.

For more information about how to install Business Portal, see Chapters 8 and 9 of the Microsoft Business Portal Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Business Portal, see to the appropriate installation documentation. 

7. On the second server that is running IIS, install WSS or SharePoint Portal Server. This server that is running IIS contains the Business Portal installation that is used together with Canadian Payroll. Then, extend the Business Portal Web site. 

Notes 
• If you install WSS or SharePoint Portal Server as a Typical installation, MSDE will be installed locally to the server that is running IIS to store the content and configuration databases. If you use the Server Farm installation, the content and configuration databases should be directed to the named instance of SQL Server or to the separate SQL Server for Canadian Payroll. 

• For more information about how to install WSS, see Chapter 7 of the Microsoft Business Portal Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Business Portal, see to the appropriate documentation or the WSS and SharePoint Server documentation. 

8. On the second server that is running IIS, install Business Portal. 

Note For more information about how to install Business Portal, see Chapters 8 and 9 of the Microsoft Business Portal Installation Manual . For earlier versions of Business Portal, see to the appropriate installation documentation. 

9. On each server that is running IIS, start Business Portal by entering the Business Portal URL in the address bar of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Enter http:// ServerName /sites/BusinessPortal, where ServerName is the name of the Web server on which you installed Business Portal. Depending on your Internet Explorer security settings, you may have to log on. 
Note 
For more information about how to start and configure Business Portal, see Chapter 9 and Part 4 of the Microsoft Business Portal Installation Manual . The manual is available on the Business Portal 3.0 CD. For earlier versions of Business Portal, see the appropriate installation manual. 

10. Give the Business Portal users the URLs for the US Payroll installation and for the Canadian Payroll installation. Make sure that the users understand which URL is used with which installation.
