Symptoms

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may not start on your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer that has Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 installed. Additionally, events that are similar to the following may be logged in the application event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: Content Engine
Event ID: 1180
Description:
Error 0x80010119 initializing the Microsoft Exchange Server Internet Conversion Library.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event Category: General
Event ID: 5000
Description: Unable to initialize the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service. Error.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

To install this hotfix, you must have Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer to install this hotfix. However, the following Exchange services are automatically restarted when you install this hotfix:
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  • Microsoft Exchange Event service

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

You may have previously installed hotfix 836027 to correct this same problem before you installed Exchange Server 2003 SP1. Because the 836027 hotfix was not included in the Exchange Server 2003 SP1 release, you must install this post-SP1 hotfix on your Exchange Server 2003 SP1 computers.
