A delay may occur before the contents of a folder are displayed in the Windows Explorer Folders pane in Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Assume the following: In the Folders pane in Windows Explorer, you click a folder that is located on the local hard disk of your Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based or Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. In this scenario, a delay may occur before the folder opens. Therefore, it may take longer than expected for the contents of the folder to be displayed.

If you click the same folder in the main Windows Explorer pane, no delay occurs before the folder opens.

Note The main Windows Explorer pane is on the right side of the Windows Explorer screen.

Cause

This problem occurs if the folder contains many subfolders and files and if these subfolders also contain many subfolders and files. For example, you may experience this problem if the folder stores 25 gigabytes (GB) of data and contains more than 1000 subfolders. This problem occurs because the Shdocdvw.dll component does not use a separate thread to extract folder information when you click a local folder in the Folders pane.
