Microsoft Exchange Information Store service crashes periodically after you install Exchange Server 2003 SP1

Symptoms

After you install Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may crash periodically. When this problem occurs, one or more events that are similar to the following may be recorded in the system event log on the server.

This problem may occur when there is a malformed e-mail message or other malformed item in the information store.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

This hotfix requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Restart requirement

You must stop and then restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service when you install this hotfix. You should install the hotfix on the front-end servers first, and then install the hotfix on the back-end servers.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.

Important An earlier version of this hotfix was previously available. However, a problem existed in this earlier hotfix version. Therefore, this hotfix has been recreated. If you have an earlier version of this hotfix installed, we recommend that you remove it, and then reinstall the current version of this hotfix.

Hotfix installation information

If this hotfix is installed on servers that are part of a front-end or a back-end configuration, the hotfix must be installed on the front-end server first. Then, it must be installed on the back-end server. If the hotfix is not installed on the front-end server first, Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) Web pages do not load correctly in Web browsers.
