Windows Server 2003 may send PGM NAK packets to the original packet sender instead of to the PGM router

Symptoms

When network IP packets are dropped by a Pragmatic General Multicast (PGM) router, the computer that receives the packet is expected to send negative acknowledgement (NAK) packets to the PGM router. The NAK packets request the dropped packets. However, a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based receiving computer may send the NAK packets to the original packet sender instead of to the PGM router.

Note The Microsoft Message Queueing (MSMQ) 3.0 multicast is based on the PGM transport protocol.

Resolution

This problem was fixed in Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
