Kits vs. Finished Goods in Great Plains

TechKnowledge Content

Issue

What are the differences between kits in Sales Order Processing and finished goods in Bill of Materials?

Resolution

The chart below displays the functional differences between Kits and Finished Goods:
Kits Finished Goods
Kit Quantities are not tracked in Inventory. Quantities are tracked only for the components of a kit. Quantities of bill items are tracked in Inventory like a regular Sales/Inventory item. Components were decreased at the time of assembling the bill.
A kit cannot be a component of another kit. A bill can be a component of another bill. This is called a subassembly.
Kits can only be sold in Sales Order Processing. They cannot be sold in Invoicing. Bills increase the on-hand quantity for their correlating Sales/Inventory item in Inventory. Therefore, they can be sold in both Sales Order Processing and Invoicing.
When you enter a kit on an order or invoice, each component is checked for shortages. When you enter a Bill item on an order of invoice, the finished good is checked for shortages. If you don't have enough on hand, the Bill must be assembled in Bill of Materials. Components are checked for shortages during assembly.
A kit cannot be used on transactions in Purchase Order Processing or Inventory. A Bill Number can technically be put on Inventory and Purchase Order Processing transactions, however if the Bill Number is something that is built, only the components should be entered through IV and POP.
The components of a kit can be changed on a per transaction basis. The components of a bill can be changed on a per transaction basis as explained above.
You cannot partially transfer kits. For example, if a kit item is on an order with the Quantity to Order of 5, you cannot transfer 2 to an invoice and 3 to a back order. You must either invoice or back order all 5. By the time you sell a finished good in Sales Order Processing, you have completely built the item and it is treated as a regular Sales/Inventory item. Therefore, you can partially transfer finished good items
You cannot return to multiple return types. (i.e. In Use, Damaged, etc.) when using kits. You can return specific components of a kit to multiple quantity types. The finished good item is treated as a regular Sales/Inventory item. Therefore, when returning more than one, they can be returned to more than one return type.
The only quantity field that is updated for a kit is the quantity sold. All quantity fields are updated for finished good items.
Cannot track serial/lot numbers for a kit. Serial/lot can be tracked for the component if the item type is Sales/Inventory or Discontinued. Serial/lot numbers can be tracked for the finished good and the components.
