You receive an error message when you try to perform a backup operation on a Windows Server 2003-based computer

Symptoms

When you try to perform a backup operation on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, you receive the following error message:
The device reported an error on a request to MS_UpdateNtmsOmidInfo
Error reported: 5
If you use the Oleview.exe tool to create a Removable Storage Media Label Library (MLL) class instance, you may receive the following error message:
CoGetClassObject failed.
Server execution failed
CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE ($80080005)
An error message that is similar to the following may be logged in the application event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10010
Date: 19/02/2004
Time: 13:12:07
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: Server Name
Description: The server {590A29BA-CF7E-4034-82AB-CBBEF9BA844E} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

Cause

This issue may occur if the Allow service to interact with desktop check box is selected in the remote procedure call (RPC) service.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, clear the Allow service to interact with desktop check box in the RPC service. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the right pane, locate and then click Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
  3. On the Action menu, click Properties.
  4. Click the Log On tab, click to clear the Allow service to interact with desktop check box, and then click OK.
  5. Quit Services.
  6. Restart your computer.
