Answer:
Windows and Windows NT clients select the font in the following way:
1. Report Writer determines the size of the report in characters.
2. The Dynamics engine communicates with the driver to find out which fonts are on the printer.
3. The Dynamics engine compares each font to see how many characters it can fit on each line within the printable region and decides which one will fit best.
Example 1:
You marked Best Text Fit in the Report Definition window for a report
The printer has the following fonts
8.5 characters per inch (CPI) Roman
10 CPI Roman
12 CPI Roman
You would like to print an 80-character report within an 8-inch printable region
8.5 CPI could fit 68 characters, an error of 12 characters
10 CPI could fit 80 characters, an error of 0
12 CPI could fit 96 characters, with room for 16 more characters
The font chosen would be 10 CPI Roman
Best fit doesn't mean the closest font, but the best font that will allow all characters to be printed, without clipping.
Example 2:
You marked Best Text Fit in the Report Definition window for a report
The printer has the following fonts
8.5 characters per inch (CPI) Roman
10 CPI Roman
12 CPI Roman
You would like to print an 81-character report within an 8-inch printable region
8.5 CPI could fit 68 characters, an error of 13 characters
10 CPI could fit 80 characters, an error of 1 character
12 CPI could fit 96 characters, with room for 15 more characters
The font chosen would be 12 CPI Roman, so there will be right hand margin of 1 1/2 inches
Best text fit reports will not always have text that extends from margin to margin, with each margin being equal in size.
