Stop error code 0x000000D1 when Windows Server 2003 is under a heavy network load

Symptoms

Your Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer may intermittently stop responding (hang), and you may receive a "STOP D1 (DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL)" error message on a blue screen that is similar to the following:

Cause

This problem may occur during a period of high network use. The problem is most likely to occur on a Windows Server 2003-based computer that uses two or more processors or that uses a single processor with hyperthreading enabled. The problem occurs because, during the fast retransmit of a segment, the segment has already been acknowledged with a TCP acknowledgment (ACK).

Resolution

To resolve this problem, download and install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
