Event ID 2502 after you try to manually scavenge DNS resource records in Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

On your Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, you manually initiate the scavenging of resource records at the server level. To do this, you right-click the DNS server in the DNS snap-in, and then click Scavenge Stale Resource Records. When you view the DNS Server event log, the following information event ID message may be logged:

Cause

This behavior occurs if you try to manually scavenge a DNS zone that supports dynamic updates immediately after you enable scavenging. You cannot scavenge the zone until the date and the time in the The zone can be scavenged after box is reached. If you try to manually scavenge the records before this date and time, the event ID 2502 message is logged.

Note To view the The zone can be scavenged after box, click the Aging button on the General tab of the Properties dialog box for the zone. If the The zone can be scavenged after box does not appear on the General tab, first click Advanced on the View menu in the DNS snap-in.

Workaround

To work around this behavior, we recommend that you wait until the date and time that is defined in the The zone can be scavenged after box is reached before you start scavenging.
