View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

When you try to increase the Available PostScript Memory setting for a PostScript printer driver, the updated value may not be displayed correctly in the printer driver properties.

Note The Available PostScript Memory setting is located on the Device Settings tab in the printer driver properties.

Cause

By default, the maximum Available PostScript Memory value for a PostScript printer driver is 32767 kilobytes (KB). If the PostScript printer driver is configured to use more than 32767 KB of memory, and if you reset the Available PostScript Memory value for that driver to more than 32767 KB, the PostScript printer description (PPD) file for the printer driver is updated with the new value. However, the PostScript printer driver user interface (UI) may not be able to display the new value for the Available PostScript Memory setting on the Device Settings tab. In this scenario, the PostScript printer driver UI continues to display the default minimum setting of 249 KB for the Available PostScript Memory value.

Workaround

To work around this issue, follow these steps. Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Printers\<PrinterName>\PrinterDriverData
  3. In the right pane of Registry Editor, click FreeMem.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  5. Under Base, click Decimal.
  6. Verify whether the newly set value for the Available PostScript Memory setting is updated in the FreeMem registry entry. If this value is not updated, type a value that is supported by the PostScript printer driver in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  7. Quit Registry Editor.
