The Exchange Server 2003 Recipient Update Service modifies an imported user's proxy address when you configure an interorganizational connection agreement

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

After you create an Active Directory Connector (ADC) interorganizational (between organizations) connection agreement that replicates users from a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 organization to the Active Directory directory service, when you modify the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 recipient policy or policies, those recipient policy modifications are applied to the users who you imported by using the interorganizational connection agreement.

You do not expect the Recipient Update Service to modify the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) proxy addresses of users from the source organization.

Cause

This issue occurs if you do not turn off the automatic updating of e-mail address generation for the imported users in Active Directory. User accounts that you create by using an interorganizational connection agreement are automatically updated by the Recipient Update Service. However, this automatic SMTP proxy address update does not interrupt e-mail delivery to these contacts.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, turn off the automatic updating of e-mail addresses in Active Directory. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Active Directory Users and Computers tool. To do this, click Start, click Run, type dsa.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand the container where the user account that you want to modify is located, right-click the user account, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the E-mail Addresses tab, click the SMTP e-mail address, and then click Edit.
  4. In the E-mail address box, type the e-mail address that you want to assign to this user account, and then click OK.
  5. Click to clear the Automatically update e-mail addresses based on recipient policy check box, and then click OK.

More information

An interorganizational connection agreement is designed to help you migrate your organization to Exchange 2003. This connection agreement is not intended to be used for long-term interoperation between Exchange organizations.
