Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 stops unexpectedly when you view a Web program on Windows XP

When you try to use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 to move through screens in a Web program or to scroll down a page in a Web program, Internet Explorer may stop unexpectedly (crash) with an access violation in MSHTML.

This problem may occur if you are viewing an internal Web program. MSHTML may not calculate the layout of certain Web pages correctly. If the Web page layout is not calculated correctly, the access violation occurs.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you apply this hotfix, you must edit the registry. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate the following registry subkey:
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
3. Right-click Main, point to New, and then click Key.
4. Type FeatureControl, and then press ENTER to name the new subkey.
5. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
6. Type KB841368_Update_Layout_Calculations, and then press ENTER to name the new subkey.
7. Right-click KB841368_Update_Layout_Calculations, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
8. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER to name the new value.
9. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
10. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
11. Close Registry Editor.
