The Performance tool in Windows Server 2003 displays an incorrect value for the "Avg Recipients/msg Sent" counter when you send an SMTP message to an Exchange Server 2003 recipient

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure the Performance tool to display values for the Avg Recipients/msg Sent counter for the SMTP Server performance object.
  • You send an SMTP message to an e-mail recipient.
  • This message is sent between two computers that are running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
In this scenario, when you view the value for the Avg Recipients/msg Sent counter, you notice that the value is incremented by 2. You expect the value to be incremented by only 1 because you sent the message to only one recipient.
