Cause

This problem occurs when Excel Viewer is idle. While it is idle, Excel Viewer uses lots of CPU time. However, the Excel Viewer thread is a low-priority thread. Because of this, you do not typically experience a performance problem when you use Excel Viewer on a stand-alone workstation computer. However, Excel Viewer may cause performance problems on a terminal server. Because of this, Microsoft recommends that you do not use Excel Viewer on a server computer.

Workaround

To work around this problem, save the worksheet in HTML format to permit users to view the worksheet by using a Web browser program.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Excel 2000.
