Symptoms

When you browse through the folders that are in the Open dialog box in Microsoft Word 2000, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Some of the files that meet the search criteria maybe missing from the list. IO error 82
If you click OK in this error message and then try to open a file, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
The file <name and path> is locked for editing by another user

Cause

This behavior occurs if the Temp folder is either full or corrupted.

Resolution

To resolve this behavior, re-create the Temp folder. To do so, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
1.Rename the Temp folder. To do so, follow these steps:
a. Restart Microsoft Windows in Safe Mode.

b. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
c. In the left pane, expand My Computer, and then click Local Disk (C:).
d. In the right pane, double-click WINDOWS.
e. Right-click Temp, and then click Rename.
f. Type Old Temp, and then press ENTER.
2.Create a new Temp folder. To do so, follow these steps:
a. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
b. In the left pane, expand My Computer, and then click Local Disk (C:).
c. In the right pane, double-click WINDOWS.
d. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
e. Type Temp, and then press ENTER.
