How to configure a PPPoE connection in ISA Server 2006 or in ISA Server 2004

View products that this article applies to.

Introduction

Certain broadband asynchronous digital subscriber line (ADSL) or digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service providers (ISPs) require a special dial-up connection that uses Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE).

This article describes how to configure Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2006, ISA Server 2004 or Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition to use this type of connection as the primary route to the Internet.

Note See the documentation from your ISP for the installation and configuration of any third-party PPPoE connection that you may require.

In this type of configuration, the ISA Server computer is configured with more than one network adapter and with a dial-up PPPoE network connection. One network adapter is connected to the internal network, and one network adapter is connected to the broadband modem.

To configure ISA Server, add the PPPoE dial-up entry, configure the internal network, and then configure any routes to use the dial-up entry.

Configure a dial-up entry on the ISA Server computer

Certain PPPoE programs, such as WinPoET, are represented by a dial-up entry. To configure ISA Server to use a dial-up entry for Internet access, follow these steps:
  1. Start the ISA Server Management tool.
  2. Expand ServerName, where ServerName is the name of your ISA Server computer.
  3. Expand Configuration, and then click Networks.
  4. In the center pane, click the Networks tab, click the Tasks tab in the right pane, and then click Specify Dial-up Preferences.
  5. Click Allow automatic dialing to this network, click External in the list of networks, click to select the Configure this dial-up connection as the default gateway check box if you want to use this connection as your default route to the Internet, and then click Select.
  6. In the Network Dial-up Connection list, click the PPPoE connection that you want ISA Server to connect to, and then click OK.
  7. Click Set Account, type the account credentials for the PPPoE connection, and then click OK.

Note These are the credentials that are provided by your ISP.
  8. Click Apply to save your changes and to update the firewall policy, and then click OK.
  9. Verify that a default gateway is not configured on any one of the internal network adapters on the ISA Server computer.

Configure a dial-up entry on the Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition

  1. Start the Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition Management tool.
  2. Expand ServerName, where ServerName is the name of your Forefront Threat Management Gateway, Medium Business Edition Server computer.
  3. Click Networking.
  4. Click the Tasks tab in the right pane, and then clickSpecify Dial-up Preferences.

Configure the internal network

When you configure the internal network, include only the network adapter that represents the internal local area network (LAN). The inclusion of the network adapter that is connected to the DSL modem does not prevent internal users from accessing the Internet, but it may open your internal network to access from the external network.
