Summary

This article describes the Microsoft Office Excel 2003 issues that are fixed in the Excel 2003 hotfix package that is dated April 12, 2004.

Issues that are fixed in the hotfix package

The following issues are fixed in this hotfix package, but were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.
  • After you open a signed Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro project in Excel 2003, you may receive the following error message:
You have modified a signed project. You do not have the correct key to sign this project. The signature will be discarded.
This problem occurs if Excel performs an AutoRecover save before you perform a full save of your workbook and before you discard the old certificate. Therefore, the old certificate is not discarded and the workbook is not saved. If you then try to open another item in your macro project (such as a user form), you receive the following error message:
    Device I/O error.
If you then try to save the changes to your workbook, you receive one of the following error messages:
    Document not saved.

An unexpected error has occurred. AutoRecover has been disabled for this session of Excel.
  • When you open an Excel 2003 workbook that contains Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) links to a source, you receive the following message to update the links:
This workbook contains links to other data sources.

    * If you update the links, Excel will attempt to retrieve the latest data.
    * If you don't update the links, Excel will use the previous information.

Note that data links can be used to access and share confidential information without your permission and possibly perform other harmful actions. Do not update the links if you do not trust the source of this workbook.
When you click Update, a Dynamic Data Exchange dialog box appears. In the Dynamic Data Exchange dialog box, you can select the data source. If the data source does not exist, and then you click either OK or Cancel to close the Dynamic Data Exchange dialog box, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

The information you were working on might be lost. Microsoft Office Excel can try to recover it for you.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to help us improve Microsoft Office Excel. We will treat this report as confidential and anonymous.
If you click the What data does this error report contain link to view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature that is similar to the following:
    AppName AppVer ModName ModVer Offset
    --------------------------------------------------------
    Excel.exe 11.0.5612.0 Excel.exe 11.0.5612.0 0040cf4d

  • When you try to save changes to your Excel 2003 workbook, you may receive a sharing violation error message. If you click to either lose all changes or to save the workbook with a different file name, the temporary AutoRecover file is not deleted and the AutoRecover temporary file is added to the Most Recently Used (MRU) list.
