Windows may not respond when you try to load a registry hive

Symptoms

When you try to load a registry hive or try to log on to your computer, the computer may appear to stop responding.

Cause

This problem occurs because a security descriptor in the registry is corrupted. If you are the only user who cannot load a hive on the computer or log on to the computer, your user profile may be corrupted.

Resolution

To prevent this problem, apply the following hotfix. Even after you apply the hotfix, the registry hive may not load because it is corrupted. To fully resolve the problem, you may have to delete the corrupted registry hive.

Important Make sure that you back up your system before you remove a registry hive.

Microsoft Windows Server 2003

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this problem, disable the registry repair and recovery feature as documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 815011.
