The "Enable Forms Based Authentication" check box is unavailable in Exchange Server 2003

Symptoms

When you open the Exchange Virtual Server Properties dialog box in Exchange System Manager, and then click the Settings tab, you notice that the Enable Forms Based Authentication check box is unavailable (appears dimmed). Therefore, you cannot enable forms based authentication on the HTTP virtual server.

Cause

This issue occurs if Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 is installed on a server cluster. Forms based authentication is not supported on a server cluster.

Workaround

To work around this issue, configure forms based authentication on an Exchange 2003 front-end server. Then configure the users who have mailboxes on the server cluster to connect to their mailboxes by using the Exchange front-end server that has forms based authentication enabled.
