Web page does not print when you change from landscape orientation to portrait orientation

Symptoms

You have a Web page that contains nested tables and that is linked to a cascading style sheet (a .css file). When you first print the Web page from Internet Explorer by using landscape orientation, and then you try to print the Web page by using portrait orientation, the page may not print.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
  3. Right-click the registry key that you located in step 2, click New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FeatureControl for the name of the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click the FeatureControl subkey, click New, and then click Key.
  6. Type FEATURE_PAGINATIONREDUCTION_834158 for the name of the new subkey, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click the subkey that you created in step 6, click New, and then click DWORD Value.
  8. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  9. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type 00000001, and then click OK.
  11. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.

More information

The problem occurs when the number of pages that you are printing is two pages in landscape orientation and one in page in portrait orientation. Therefore, if the HTML Web page that you are printing is multiple pages in portrait orientation, this problem may not occur. Also the problem may not occur if you print from the Print Preview dialog box in Internet Explorer.
