Exchange Server 2003 Always-up-to-date Notifications do not work with your mobile device

Symptoms

When you try to use the Always-up-to-date Notifications feature in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the feature may not function with your mobile device.

Cause

This problem occurs because some wireless carriers block specially-formatted Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) messages that contain a blank From field. Some carriers block all messages that have blank From fields because some junk e-mail messages contain blank From fields.

Service pack information

Hotfix activation

To activate this hotfix, follow these steps.
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange
  4. If there is an OMA key, go directly to step 7.
  5. To create an OMA key, point to New on the Edit menu, and then click Key.
  6. Type OMA, and then press ENTER.
  7. Locate and then click the following subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\OMA
  8. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  9. Type SMTP821FromAddress, and then press ENTER.
  10. Right-click SMTP821FromAddress, and then click Modify.
  11. Type your e-mail address in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    Make sure that the e-mail address is less than 64 characters in length. Use the same format as the following sample e-mail address: someone@example.com.
  12. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

More information

Always-up-to-date Notifications is a new feature in Exchange 2003 that permits an always up-to-date user experience with Pocket PC. This feature is only available on devices that have Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 operating system. By default, Always-up-to-date Notifications are installed with Exchange 2003. When an event is generated in a user's Exchange account, a notification is sent to the user's device. The device performs synchronization in the background so that the most current information is available when the user next checks the device.
