Menu items are missing after you upgrade from an earlier version of Microsoft Access to Microsoft Office Access 2003

Symptoms

When you upgrade an earlier version of Microsoft Access to Microsoft Office Access 2003, the following menu items may be missing:
  • The macro Security menu item may be missing.

    To determine whether the macro Security menu item is missing, point to Macro on the Tools menu in the Database window.
  • The Object Dependencies menu item may be missing.

    To determine whether the Object Dependencies menu item is missing, follow these steps:
    1. In the Database window, click Tables under Objects.
    2. In the right pane of the Database window, click to select any table.

      On the View menu, you may notice that the Object Dependencies menu item is missing.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Add the macro Security menu item

  1. Start Access 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Customize, and then click the Commands tab.
  3. Click Rearrange Commands, and then click Menu Bar.
  4. On the Menu Bar drop-down list box, click to select Tools | Macro.
  5. Under Controls, click Add.

    The Add command dialog box appears.
  6. In the Categories box, click Tools.
  7. In the Commands box, click Security.
  8. Click OK.

    The Security menu item appears in the Controls box.
  9. Position the Security menu item by using the Move Up button and the Move Down button.

    To position the Security menu item in its own group that is between horizontal lines, follow these steps:
    1. In the Rearrange Commands dialog box, click Security under Controls.
    2. Click Modify Selection, and then click Begin a Group.
    3. Click the menu item that is located below the Security menu item.
    4. Click Modify Selection, and then click Begin a Group.
  10. Click Close two times.

Reset the toolbars in Access 2003

Important If you reset the toolbars in Access 2003 to their original settings, you may lose the custom changes that are implemented in the toolbars.
  1. Start Access 2003.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Customize.
  3. On the Toolbars tab, click to select the Menu Bar check box on the Customize dialog box.
  4. Click Reset, and then click OK.
  5. Click to select the Database check box, click Reset, and then click OK.
  6. Click Close.

    The missing menu items that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section are now available.

The object dependencies feature and the macro security feature are new features in Access 2003. By using the Object Dependencies menu item, you can view information about dependencies between the database objects. By using the macro Security menu item, you can set the security level for macros in Access 2003 to help protect your computer against potentially unsafe Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) code.
