"A Product ID was not generated during installation" error message when you try to activate a Terminal Server license server

Symptoms

When you try to activate a Terminal Server license server, you receive the following error message:
A Product ID was not generated during installation. Reinstall the license server software.
If you reinstall the license server software, the issue is not resolved and you receive the same error message when you next try to activate the Terminal Server license server.

Cause

This issue may occur if the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Product ID (PID) is not available or if the PID contains incorrect information. This issue may occur when you create and deploy an operating system image by using the server deployment program from Altiris.

When you experience this issue, the PID is incorrectly formatted or the PID contains characters that are not valid. For example, a PID that is similar to the following may appear:
VQBTMT-R689C-8V4PP-T628P
Note To view the PID, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. The PID appears under Registered to on the General tab.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Change the PID to a valid PID by using the Altiris server deployment program. For information about how to do this, contact Altiris. To do this, visit the following Altiris Web site:
  2. Remove and then reinstall the Terminal Server Licensing component.
  3. Activate the Terminal Server license server.
