"No such device or address" error message when you use the Ftp utility to transfer files in Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

When you use the Ftp utility (Ftp.exe) to transfer a file on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
No such device or address

Cause

This problem may occur if two File Transfer Protocol (FTP) clients try to transfer the same file at the same time. The problem occurs because of a file sharing violation.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Workaround

To work around this problem, turn on number sign (#) printing. Number sign printing is also known as hash-mark printing. By default, hash is turned off. To turn hash on, type hash at the ftp command prompt before you use the put command.
