INTRODUCTION

This article contains information about Microsoft Jet 4.0 Database Engine Service Pack 8 (SP8).

Important Jet 4.0 SP8 is not the latest update for the Jet 4.0 Database Engine when you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003. However, the downloads for Jet 4.0 SP8 are still available.

Important You must install the latest Jet update as an important step toward keeping your Jet database in top working condition.

How to download the latest Jet 4.0 service pack

There are currently five different versions of the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 download that are available:
  • For computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000


    Important If you are running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Update Rollup 1, you have a later version of Jet 4.0 than the version that is included with Jet 4.0 SP8. We recommend that you install the latest service pack for Windows 2000.     If you cannot install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Update Rollup 1, you can use Windows2000-KB829558-x86-ENU.exe to install Jet 4.0 SP8 on computers that are running Windows 2000.
  • For computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP


    Important If you are running Windows XP SP2, you have a later version of Jet 4.0 than the version that is included with Jet 4.0 SP8.   • For computers that are running Microsoft Windows Server 2003

    If you cannot install Windows Server 2003 SP1, you can use WindowsServer2003-KB829558-x86-ENU.exe to install Jet 4.0 SP8 on computers that are running Windows Server 2003.
  • For computers that are running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0

    Use Jet40SP8_9xNT.exe to install Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 on computers that are running Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT version 4.0.
  • For computers that are running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

    Use Jet40SP8_WMe.exe to install Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 on computers that are running Windows Millennium Edition.

If you obtain the Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 download for computers that are running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, you will also receive the ODBC Desktop Driver Pack drivers. These drivers are included with the Windows 2000 operating system, the Windows XP operating system, and the Windows Server 2003 operating system. Note The Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 download for computers that are running Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 does include the ODBC Desktop Driver Pack drivers but does not completely install the drivers. To correctly register the ODBC drivers on your computer, you also have to install Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6 or later. MDAC does not include these driver files, but MDAC does include the core ODBC DLLs that are required to install the drivers and to use the drivers. You must install MDAC after Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 so that the files are correctly registered.

Additionally, Jet 4.0 Service Pack 8 fixes the following past problems:
  • Performance problems occurred when certain pass-through queries were run. BUG #: 17871 (Jet Database Engine Red)
  • Microsoft Access unexpectedly quit when you tried to upsize a database where the tables contained triggers.

    Note This service pack prevents Access from quitting. This service pack does not make it possible for you to upsize tables with triggers.BUG #: 17820 (Jet Database Engine Red)
  • An "Invalid argument" error message occurred when you tried to create a linked table by using DAO code after the installation of Jet 4.0 Service Pack 7. BUG #: 17892 (Jet Database Engine Red)
  • An access violation occurred when you ran certain queries that used linked Paradox tables. BUG #: 17846 (Jet Database Engine Red)
  • Oracle integer field appeared as double in Access. BUG #: 10632 (Jet Database Engine Red)
  • When you tried to create links to dBase files, you received an access violation or nothing occurred. That is, no link was created, and you did not receive an error message. BUG #: 17895 (Jet Database Engine Red)
  • When you refreshed a linked table, you were prompted to select a DSN although you were still using the same DSN, and all the connection information was correct. BUG #: 17891 (Jet Database Engine Red)
