Symptoms

If you enable the keyboard layout of your computer to use a right-to-left (bidirectional) language (such as Syriac) in a Microsoft Access database project, and you try to create a table in Design view, the column names in the table may appear as a sequence of square boxes. Additionally, you may not be able to save the table.

Note This problem may also occur when you enable the keyboard layout of your computer to use other languages, such as Hindi, Telugu, Gujarati, Punjabi, and Kannada.

More information

Because you may not be able to create tables with field names in bidirectional languages, you can create the tables and use the English language to enter the field names.

Note You can insert the data into the table in the appropriate bidirectional language.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Enable the keyboard layout of you computer to use Syriac text.
  2. Start Microsoft Office Access 2003 or earlier versions of Access.
  3. Open the sample Access database project named NorthwindCS.adp.
  4. In the Database window, under Objects, click Tables.
  5. In the right pane, double-click Create table in Design view.
  6. Under the Field Name column, type a column name in Syriac.

When you type the field name, the Syriac text is displayed as square boxes.
