The Configuration Connection Agreement stops with event ID 8146 in the application log in a mixed-mode Exchange 2000 Server environment

View products that this article applies to.

Symptoms

In a mixed-mode Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server and Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 environment, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • You receive a non-delivery report (NDR) when you send an e-mail message between the Exchange 2000 Server computer and the Exchange 5.5 Server computer by using an X.400 one-off address.
  • In the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program on the Exchange 5.5 Server computer, the Exchange 2000 Server computer object appears, but the Exchange 2000 Server computer children objects do not appear. When you expand the Exchange 2000 Server computer name, Microsoft DSA is the only child container that appears.
  • Events that are similar to the following may be logged in the application event log of the Exchange 2000 Server computer:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8146
    Description:
An operation on server 'ServerName' returned [0x2] Protocol Error. The Connection Agreement Config CA_AgreementName stopped.

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8033
    Description:
LDAP search result on directory ServerName for entry 'CN=Public Folders,CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=AdministrativeGroup,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OrganizationName,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=DomainComponent,DC=DomainComponent' was unsuccessful with error:[0x2] Protocol Error. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8304
    Description:
ADC will not replicate entry 'cn=LDAP,cn=Protocols,cn=ServerName,cn=Servers,cn=Configuration,ou=SiteName,o=OrganizationName' because protocol settings for this protocol type are not replicated from the Exchange 5.5 directory to the Active directory. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8298
    Description:
ADC will not replicate entry 'cn=ServerName,cn=Servers,cn=Configuration,ou=SiteName,o=OrganizationName' to the Active directory because the target object 'CN=ServerName,CN=Servers,CN=AdministrativeGroup,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OrganizationName,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=DomainComponent,DC=DomainComponent' should be administered using the Exchange Server 2000 administration snap-in only. Any changes applied to the object in the Exchange 5.5 directory will get over-written the next time the Active directory object replicates back to the Exchange 5.5 directory. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8303
    Description:
ADC will not replicate entry 'cn=IMAP4,cn=Protocols,cn=Configuration,ou=SiteName,o=OrganizationName' because site-level protocol settings are not replicated from the Exchange 5.5 directory to the Active directory. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8302
    Description:
ADC will not replicate entry 'cn=X400:i386,cn=Address-Types,cn=Addressing,cn=Configuration,ou=SiteName,o=OrganizationName' to 'CN=X400:i386,CN=Address-Types,CN=Addressing,CN=OrganizationName,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=DomainComponent,DC=DomainComponent' because the target object has a higher file version than the source object. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8305
    Description:
ADC will not replicate entry 'cn=cf423bb6e221ab4a83406ad5afeee216,cn=Dir-Repl,cn=Configuration,ou=SiteName,o=OrganizationName' because the following required attribute(s) are missing from the source entry: Remote-Site. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8320
    Description:
The ADC is replicating top level folder creation permissions on the source object cn=Site-MDB-Config,cn=Configuration,ou=SiteName,o=OrganizationName to the Active directory. It was unable to locate a corresponding object on a Windows 2000 global catalog with a LegacyExchangeDN of /o=OrganizationName/ou=SiteName/cn=Recipients/cn=UserName. This security setting will not be mapped to the Exchange 2000 MAPI TLH. Ensure that this object exists in Exchange 5.5 and that it has successfully replicated into the Active Directory. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8109
    Description:
Could not import the entry 'CN=Public Folders,CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=AdministrativeGroup,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OrganizationName,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=DomainComponent,DC=DomainComponent' into the directory server 'ServerName' in the first attempt. (Connection Agreement 'Config CA_AgreementName' #1584)

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MSADC
    Event ID: 8270
    Description:
LDAP returned the error [10] No Such Attribute when importing the transaction
    dn: CN=Public Folders,CN=Folder Hierarchies,CN=AdministrativeGroup,CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OrganizationName,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=DomainComponent,DC=DomainComponent

Cause

This behavior may occur if certain users or distribution lists are explicitly granted permissions to create top-level public folders or are explicitly denied permissions to create top-level public folders on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

Workaround

To work around this behavior, you must reset the default top-level public folders permissions on the Exchange Server 5.5 computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Connect to the Exchange 5.5 Server computer by using the Microsoft Exchange Administrator program.
  2. Expand Site, and then click Configuration.
  3. In the right pane, double-click Information Store Site Configuration.
  4. Click the Top Level Folder Creation tab.
  5. To reset the default top-level public folders permissions, under Allowed to create top level folders, click All, under Not allowed to create top level folders, click None, and then click OK.
  6. On the Exchange 5.5 Server computer, restart the Exchange Information Store service. To do this:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Right-click the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, and then click Restart.
    3. Click Yes if you are prompted to restart other services.
  7. On the Exchange 2000 Server computer, restart the Active Directory Connector service. To do this:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Right-click the Microsoft Active Directory Connector service, and then click Restart.
  8. Wait approximately 30 minutes.

After approximately 30 minutes, replication should occur and the missing Exchange 2000 objects should appear in the Exchange Administrator program on the Exchange 5.5 Server computer. E-mail should work correctly in both directions.

More information

Although the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 306360 describes a similar issue, the behavior that is described in this article may occur when both of the following are true:
  • A two-way user Connection Agreement is configured that replicates the mailboxes and the distribution lists from Exchange Server 5.5 to Exchange 2000 Server.
  • The Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 Active Directory Connector is installed.
