FrontPage Server Extensions stops responding in Windows Server 2003

Symptoms

When you try to install or to check Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) 2002 on a FrontPage Web site that is located on a computer that has Microsoft Windows Server 2003 installed, the installation or check of the FrontPage Server Extensions stops responding (hangs).

Note This problem also occurs when you run Check Server Health on your Web site.

Cause

This problem occurs because the installation or the check of the FrontPage Server Extensions incorrectly parses (accesses) each of the Web sites that are located on the Windows Server 2003 computer.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.
