The Beep function does not generate a beep sound in a Terminal Services session to a Windows Server 2003-based computer

Symptoms

When you connect to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer through a Terminal Services session, and you run a program that uses the Beep function to generate a beep sound when certain events occur, you do not hear any beep sounds in your Terminal Services session.

Cause

This problem occurs if the program that you are running uses an account other than the System account. In Windows Server 2003, only processes that have an access token for the System account can call the Beep function.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
