"Error 31" Error Message When You Use Dial-Up Networking to Connect to a SLIP Server

Symptoms

When you use Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) functionality to connect to a server after you are already connected to another server by using SLIP in another dial-up networking connection, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Error 31
As a result, you cannot establish a connection to the second server by using SLIP.

Cause

This problem may occur in situations where network endpoint counts are incorrectly processed by the functions that are used by Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 for SLIP functionality. This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:
  • Your Windows Server 2003-based computer or Windows 2000-based computer has two (or more) modems.
  • Each modem is configured to connect to a SLIP server by using a dial-up networking connection.
  • You dial the first connection and connect to a SLIP server, and then you try to connect to another SLIP server by dialing the second connection.

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
