Cannot administer Exchange 5.5 message transfer agent queues by using the Exchange Administrator program

Symptoms

When you follow these steps, you receive an error message:
  1. You install the Microsoft Exchange Server Administrator program on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003.
  2. You use the Administrator program to try to connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 computer.
  3. You try to view the Queues tab in the properties of the Exchange 5.5 computer's Message Transfer Agent object.
  4. On a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you install Exchange System Manager that has the Exchange 5.5 option installed to remotely manage an Exchange 5.5 computer.
The error message that you receive is the following error message:
The administrator program could not connect to server Exchange_5.5_Computer_Name. Be sure the message transfer agent service is running on Exchange_5.5_Computer_Name.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
