How to create an IMAP4 or a POP3 cluster resource on an Exchange Server 2003 virtual server

View products that this article applies to.

Summary

This article describes how to create an Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) or a Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) cluster resource on an Exchange Server 2003 virtual server.

Several security-related changes are introduced in Exchange Server 2003 that improve on the security features that were originally included in Exchange 2000 Server. One of these changes is that the IMAP4 and the POP3 cluster resources are not created by default when you create an Exchange Server 2003 virtual server when you use Exchange Server 2003 in a clustered environment. If you want to use these services on a cluster, you must start the appropriate service on the cluster node, and then manually create the resource.

To create an IMAP4 or a POP3 cluster resource on an Exchange 2003 virtual server

In previous versions of Microsoft Exchange, when you created an Exchange virtual server, the POP3 and IMAP4 cluster resources were also created. By default, in a new installation of Exchange Server 2003, the Microsoft Exchange POP3 service and the Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service are disabled, so these resources are not automatically created. To create these resources, you must manually enable the corresponding service on the cluster node, and then you must start the service.

Note When you upgrade to Exchange Server 2003 from Exchange 2000 Server, your existing settings for these services are preserved.

To create the IMAP4 or POP3 cluster resource on an Exchange virtual server, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Cluster Administrator.
  2. Expand Groups, right-click the group that contains the Exchange virtual server, point to New, and then click Resource.
  3. In the New Resource dialog box, type a name for the resource that you want to add, click the type of resource that you want to add in the Resource Type box, click the appropriate group in the Group box, and then click Next.
  4. In the Possible Owners dialog box, make sure that all cluster nodes are the owners of this resource, and then click Next.
  5. In the Dependencies dialog box, in the Available resources list, click Exchange System Attendant, click Add, and then click Next.

Note If you receive an error message that is similar to the following error message, it can mean that the resource already exists, a protocol server is not specified for the Exchange Server 2003 virtual server, or the account that you are using to add the resources does not have Exchange Full Administrator account permissions:
All the virtual server instances for this protocol are already in the cluster. ID no: c1037f37
  6. In the Parameters dialog box, click the protocol server instance that you want, and then click Finish.
