Exchange 5.5 Internet Mail Service Stops Responding if the Recipient Address or the Subject Line of a Message Exceeds 1,024 Characters

Symptoms

The Microsoft Exchange 5.5 Internet Mail Service (IMS) fails when the IMS tries to send an undeliverable message to a remote mail server. This problem occurs when the IMS is configured to send notifications, and if the message has a recipient address that exceeds 1,024 characters or the Subject line of the mail message exceeds 1,024 characters.
