The
File Download dialog box has been updated to include the following information:
- The file type.
- A warning for potentially unsafe files that explains that the file could harm your computer if it contains malicious code (for example, a virus).
When you download a file in Internet Explorer, you may receive one of two different
File Download dialog boxes. The specific
File Download dialog box that you receive is determined by whether the file type you are downloading is potentially unsafe. A file is considered potentially unsafe if any of the following are true:
- The file type is on the Internet Explorer's Unsafe File List.

- The MIME type returned by the server does not match the cached file name extension. The MIME type is also known as the content type or the media type. For additional information about MIME-type detection in Internet Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- The file type is defined as an executable by a software restriction policy in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003.

When you download a file that has an extension that is known by Internet Explorer, and the file type is not determined to be potentially unsafe, you receive a
File Download dialog box that contains the following text:
Some files can harm your computer. If the file information below looks suspicious, or you do not fully trust the source, do not open or save this file.
File name: Filename.ext
File type: Registered file type
From: Name of Server
Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer?
