The Internet Mail Connector may crash when it routes messages from one Exchange 5.5 server to another Exchange 5.5 server

Symptoms

In Microsoft Exchange Server, the Internet Mail Connector (IMC) may crash. This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • The IMC tries to route messages from one Exchange 5.5 server to another Exchange 5.5 server.
  • The Exchange server that the IMC tries to route messages to is in a different organization.
  • The IMC tries to route the messages through the SMTP connector.

Cause

The server that is sending the messages does not have correct code pages installed.

Resolution

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 service pack that contains this hotfix.
