Icons in Folder Tree Views Are Too Small to Click or to See Clearly

Symptoms

When you increase your monitor's dots per inch (DPI) setting, icons in folder tree views may be too small to see clearly. Icons that may be affected include tree expansion boxes that contain a plus or a minus sign, folder icons, and check boxes. These icons may be too small to click by using your mouse pointer. However, text appears correctly and clearly.

Cause

This problem occurs when the DPI setting in Display Properties is set to a custom size greater than 100%.

Workaround

To work around this problem, decrease the DPI setting. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
  2. Click the Settings tab, and then click the Advanced button.
  3. On the General tab, change the DPI setting value to Normal size (96 DPI).
  4. Click OK two times.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
