System information reports incorrect number of processors when you run an IBM eServer x440 in a 16-way configuration

Symptoms

When you view the processor information under System Information on a system with hyperthreading-enabled processors, the distribution of physical and logical processors may be reported incorrectly.

For example, on an IBM eServer x440 system with 16 processors, the number of processors is reported as 4 physical processors with 8 logical processors each. The correct configuration for this system is 16 physical processors with 2 logical processors each.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. To view your system information in Windows Server 2003, do one of the following:
  • Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
