Symptoms

If you unpack a site by using the Commerce Server 2002 Site Packager in custom unpack mode, and Remote Registry Service is not started, you receive the following error message at the Select IIS Computer, Web Sites and Paths step of the site packager:
Commerce Server is not installed on IIS Computer Name. If you want to use this computer, you must install Commerce Server on it before continuing.

Cause

The Commerce Server 2002 Site Packager can unpack a site to a remote Web server. When you unpack a site by using the custom unpack mode, Site Packager verifies that the following registry key exists on the Web server:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Commerce Server
If this key is in the registry, Commerce Server is installed. This registry key is also verified when you unpack a site on the local Web server. The Site Packager considers all Web servers to be remote when you use the custom unpack mode.

Resolution

You must start Remote Registry Service before you use Commerce Server 2002 Site Packager in custom unpack mode. Also:
Verify that Remote Registry Service is started on the computer where Site Packager runs.

-and-
Verify that you have Commerce Server 2002 installed on the Web server where you unpack the Commerce site.
