Jsproxy.dll Leaks an Object in the shExpMatch() Function

Symptoms

If you use the information in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 271361 to disable the automatic proxy result cache with an Automatic Proxy Configuration file that uses the shExpMatch function, the memory that the Iexplore.exe process uses may increase until the computer becomes unresponsive.

Cause

Because of a coding error in the shExpMatch function, an object is being allocated and not deleted. This leaks the memory that was allocated for the object every time the function is used.

Resolution

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Internet Explorer 6 service pack that contains this fix.
