The Internet Mail Service may quit if the Information Store runs out of memory in Exchange Server 5.5

If the Information Store runs out of memory in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5, the Internet Mail Service may quit. Additionally, the following event IDs may be logged in the Application log on the server:

Event ID 12800

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIS
Event ID: 12800
Description: Description Message processing failed because there is not enough available memory (8007000E-80000000).

Event ID 4102

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIMC
Event Category: Internal Processing
Event ID: 4102
Description: A serious error has occurred while trying to send mail into the Exchange Information Store. The Internet Mail Service is being shut down.

Event ID 4116

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeIMC
Event Category: Internal Processing
Event ID: 4116
Description: An error was returned from the messaging software the Internet Mail Service uses to process messages on the Microsoft Exchange Server. It is possible that the piece of mail being processed at the time will be returned to the sender as a failed delivery instead of being delivered. The message will be moved to the "BAD" folder, if possible, and the error is not a temporary error. Otherwise it will be retried when the service is restarted. Use the appropriate utilities found in the SUPPORT directory of your Exchange CD to view and manipulate messages that have been moved to the "BAD" folder.

To resolve this problem, obtain the November 2004 update rollup for Exchange Server 5.5.
