Symptoms

After applying SP2 to an Exchange 2003 server, messages sent to that server with an uuencoded attachment that also contain MIME information in the header are no longer formatted correctly. The attachment appears as garbled text within the email message body.

Cause

This is by design. The uuencoded attachment is rendered as text within the message body. These messages are typically sent by unix-based systems to the Exchange Server. Check the Internet header of the email to verify this.

Resolution

Suppress any generation of MIME information from the sending application or system. This can typically be accomplished with a setting within the sending program or a switch from a command line.

Alternatively, do not send an uuencoded attachment and have the sending system send a correctly formatted MIME message.
