Summary

Transaction logs do not replay as expected if restoring an online backup to an alternate server.

Symptoms

An onlinerestore redirected to a server other than the original server does not replay the transaction logs associated with the storage group even if the logs are in the defined transaction log directory path, in the same directory as the restored database(s), or in the same directory as the recovery storage group on the alternate server.

Cause

This is by design. A database restored to an alternate server is known as a "victimized database" and as a protective measure, transaction logs in the "standard" directories are not replayed.

Resolution

For best results and to force the replay of transaction logs and bring a redirected restore into a consistent state, uncheck the "Last Restore Set" checkbox in NTBACKUP( or the similar functionality in any 3rd party backup software product), so that any outstanding logs are not replayed and a hard recovery is not run automatically against the restored database(s). After the restore is complete, copy all the required transaction logs into the working temp directory you defined when creating the restore job. This will be the same directorywherethe restore.env is located. Then run eseutil with the hard recovery switch: (eseutil /cc path to directory containing the Restore.env file). This will replay any required transaction logs and bring the database(s) to a consistent state. Note: After running this command, any logs in the working directory will be purged.
