Cause

This is due to DAT File / Message corruption in MTADATA directory.

Resolution

1. Take Backup of the E:\Exchsrvr\MTADATA folder on the exchange server.

2. Copy the Db*.dat files from Setup\I386\Bootenv folder on the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 CD-ROM�in the E:\Exchsrvr\MTADATA folder.

3. Make sure�the read-only attribute from the files that�are copied from the CD-ROM to MTADATA folder is not checked.

Start the MTA resource successfully.�

The procedure is same for Exchange Clusters.

Use MTA Check, a command line tool, to check the MTA database consistency of Exchange message transfer agent (MTA) and to repair the MTA database if necessary. MTA Check will analyze and correct problems in the MTA. Run MTA Check if you suspect corruption in the MTA database or see errors written in the Event Log. MTACHECK can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=42BB1866-76EC-4A2A-BB80-EC247534D1FD&displaylang=en

Run MTACHECK /v command for any errors and make sure the database is clean.
