How to install Windows 2003 Storage Edition in NAS system

Abstract

The article can provide you the basic steps to install and configure Windows 2003 Storage Edition in NAS (Network Area Storage) environment.

Overview and installation instructions

Windows 2003 Storage Edition�is used as NAS (Network Area Storage) operating system by OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) suppliers.
The installation process is taking care by automatic installation utilities that can restore the NAS system to the default manufacture settings.
Although there are�many NAS (Network Area Storage) vendors, the installation process and setup are almost identical�from one vendor to another.
Also, most of the NAS systems operating system are pre-installed by the NAS vendor and reinstalling the product may be�require only
��� �after critical hardware or/and failure.

The NAS (Network Area Storage) system configure usually with RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) system that
��������������guarantee fault tolerance capabilities and dual boot Windows 2003 Storage Edition.

Note: Its recommend to use�the vendor support web site and�documentation to get more details on the installation process.
�������� The information in this article contain generic instructions, and you may need to verity by reviewing�the vendor�support
������� �web site and�documentation.

For this demonstration I used HP NAS 1500s 1 TB� system as reference for the installation process.

Server Function:

1. Multi Protocol Storage Server.

2. Printer Server (Optional).

Network Settings:

Server Name: "NASNAME"

Note: In Dos/9x environment it is recommended to use Server name with up to 8 characters

Server IP: x.y.z.y

Subnet Mask: x.y.z.y

Default Gateway: x.y.z.y

Primary DNS Server: x.y.z.y

Secondary�DNS Server: x.y.z.y

Primary�WINS Server: x.y.z.y

Secondary�WINS Server: x.y.z.y

Note: x.y.z.y represent the IP address of the machine / device.

Installation Process: (Estimated time: 60-90 minutes).


1. Connect the external HP DVD/DVDR device to the front USB connector on
�������� The NAS 1500s.

Note: Using incompatible external DVD/DVDR device may eliminate the boot sequence
����������� from the HP "Quick Restore" DVD or/and correct hardware detection.

2. Boot from HP StorageWorks DVD Quick restore NAS1500s (Release 4.3 or higher).

3. Press on �Q� button to install English version of Windows 2003 Storage Edition.

���� Note: All the data in the disks will be erased if the previous operating system or/and
�����������������previous Raid settings wouldn�t be found.

4. If the current array or/and operating system in unavailable state. You

�������� May need to press on "C" button.

5. After the setup process eject the installation DVD media, store the
��������� The installation DVD media in a safe place.
������
Note: Avoiding removing the DVD media will launch the installation process after
������������� Each reboot.

6. Disconnect the external USB drivers from the NAS.

7. During the installation the following steps are made:

���� a. Primary operating system installation.
���� b. Secondary operating system installation.
���� c. Driver's installations.
���� d. Clean up.

Note: The installation process will initiate several reboots during the installation
���������� Process.

8. Logon with the following credentials:

�������� Username:� �Administrator
�������� Password: �hpinvent

8. Run �TZEDIT� utility and configure the correct time zone settings.

9. Set the correct time and date.

10. Change the local admin password

11. Log off/on.


Local Policy Configurations: (Estimated time: 20 minutes).


1. Go to �Start� -> �Run�.

2. Write �services.msc� and press on "Enter" button.

3. Locate �Windows Audio� service and double click on it.

4. Change the �start type� to �Disable� and

5. Press on �Ok� button.

6. Locate �Automatic Updates� and change the �start type� to �Auto

7. Press on �Ok� button.

8. Close �services.msc� MMC.

9. Go to �Start� -> �Run�.

10. Write �gpedit.msc� and press on "Enter" button..

11. Navigate to: �Local Policy� -> �Computer Configurations� ->�Administrative
���������������� Templates� -> �Windows Components� -> �Windows Update�.

12. In the right side on the screen double click on �Configure Automatic Updates�.

13. Mark the checkbox �Not Configured�.

14. Press on �Ok� button.

15. Navigate to: �Local Policy� -> �User Configurations� ->�Administrative
���������������� Templates� -> �Windows Components� -> �Windows Update�.

16. In the right side of the screen double click on �Remove access to use all Windows Update feathers

17. Mark the checkbox �Disable

18. Press on �Ok� button.

19. Navigate to: �Local Policy� -> �User Configurations� ->�Administrative
���������������� Templates� -> �Start Menu and Task bar�.

20. In the right side of the screen double click on �Remove links and access to Windows Update�.

21. Mark the checkbox �Disable

22. Press on �Ok� button.

23. Close �gpedit.msc� MMC.

24. Copy �Windows Update� and �Windows Catalog� shortcuts to

�������� �C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu�


������������ Note: You can copy the shortcuts above from any Windows 2003 system.
����������
25. Right click on �My Computer� icon and choose �Properties�.

26. Press on �Automatic Updates� tab.

27. Mark the checkbox �Keep my computer up to date

28. Press on �Ok� button.

29. Reboot the server.

30. Log on into the server.

31. Change the network configurations as describe in

��������� "Network Settings"�section above.

Note: The NAS 1500s contains two network adapters. It's recommended
������������ To use the upper network adapter and disable the second network
������������ Adapter.

32. Download Updates from Windows Update web site.

33. Change the computer name to "NASNAME".

34. Reboot the server.

35. Add the�NAS to the domain.

36. Reboot the server.



Storage Disk Configurations: (Estimated time: 5 minutes).


Note: The following steps may be required only if you reinstall the operating system
���������� On exiting operating system that setup process has detected.

1. Right click "My Computer" icon on the desktop.

2. Choose "Manage".

3. Navigate to "Storage" -> "Disk Management".

4. Right click on the free space near Disk 2.

5. Press on "Change drive letter and paths"

6. Press on "Add" button.

7. Assign the drive letter "F".

8. Press on "Ok" button.

9. Close "Computer Management" MMC.


Shadows Copy Configurations (Optional Stage): (Estimated time: 5 minutes).

1. Logon to the NAS.

2. Double click on �My Computer� icon on the desktop.

3. Right click on �F� drive and choose �Properties�.

4. Press on �Shadows Copy� tab.

5. Press on �Settings� tab.

6. Press on �Schedule� tab.

7. Press on �Delete� button twice.

8. Press on �New� button.

9. Change the �Schedule Task� from �Daily� to �Weekly�.

10. Mark the all the checkboxes that represent days.

11. Change the �Start Time�� to �00:00

12. Press on �New� button.

13. Change the �Schedule Task� from �Daily�� to �Weekly�.

14. Mark the all the checkboxes that represent days.

15. Change the �Start Time�� to �06:00

16. Press on �New� button.

17. Change the �Schedule Task� from �Daily�� to �Weekly�.

18. Mark the all the checkboxes that represent days.

19. Change the �Start Time�� to �12:00

20. Press on �New� button.

21. Change the �Schedule Task� from �Daily�� to �Weekly�.

22. Mark the all the checkboxes that represent days.

23. Change the �Start Time�� to �18:00�.

24. Press on �Ok� button.

25. Press on �Ok� button.

26. Press on �Ok� button.

27. Close �My computer� Window.


Software Installation (Optional Stage): (Estimated time: 20 minutes).

1. Antivirus software - installations.

���������� Note: Its recommended to verity that the antivirus software supports Windows 2003
��������������������� �Storage Edition.
